KANATTA, Australia (AP) It’s not just the Kanteo Cup that will be on the line against India.
Australia is also eyeing a possible World Cup spot, if it wins the last two matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The Australians, who are trying to extend their longest unbeaten run in five seasons, are looking at the chance to repeat as champions in their final six games before the 2019 World Cup, where they are likely to face India and Sri Lanka.
“That’s the main goal, it’s about winning the last four games and if we do that we’re probably going to be there,” said Kane Williamson, the coach of Australia’s Under-20 side.
Australia’s Under 19 team will host the defending champions, India, on Saturday in the first of two Group B matches.
The two teams have met three times already this season, with India winning the first meeting by a score of 15-14 in Sydney on March 27.
India, which has won the World Cup in its last three years, is the defending champion but the last time the sides met was in 2016.
The teams will meet again on March 31, with Williamson predicting a much tougher test.
“I think it will be very close.
We’ve been playing really well and if you want to be one of the two teams that can take that series, we have to be very confident,” Williamson said.
India has won nine of the last 12 matches against Australia, with the only defeat coming in the opening match of the World Series.
Australia is hoping to keep up the momentum, but Williamson said there’s a chance it could get blown out by the two sides who are likely on a different level.
“You’re talking about a different team than you have been,” Williamson told reporters.
They’ve had a lot of games to prepare against us in a short period of time, and it’s been an excellent experience for them.””
That’s what we’re trying to prepare for, that’s what they’re trying not to do.”
They’ve had a lot of games to prepare against us in a short period of time, and it’s been an excellent experience for them.
“We’re not going to take anything away from them, they’ve done an amazing job of putting together a strong team, and we’ll have to come back and prepare ourselves to play against them.”
