MIAMI — Michigan State opened its season on a strong note with a win over a struggling Wisconsin team on Saturday.
The Spartans took a 54-45 lead with 8:47 left in the first half and kept it on the board by hitting consecutive 3-pointers from Jameel McKay and Nate Robinson, who each finished with 11 points.
After a timeout, Michigan State got within five on an alley-oop dunk by McKay, but the Badgers answered with a jumper and a layup to push the lead to 65-50.
Jahri Williams scored 14 points for the Spartans, who improved to 6-0 in conference play and now sit third in the Big Ten standings.

Jameel Murray scored 15 points for Michigan State, which outrebounded the Purdue Badgers 35-24 and shot 56 percent from the field.
Josh Smith added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Purdue, which has won three straight in the series, shot 56.5 percent for the game, while the Spartans were 18 for 23 from the floor.
The Boilermakers outscored the Spartans 31-14 in the second half.
It was their longest lead in the opening two minutes of the second quarter.
