Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James got his first taste of the NBA season in his hometown of Memphis this weekend, but that won’t last long.
James, who was expected to play a key role in the Cavs’ season-opening win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night, said he’s not expecting much from this game.
“I don’t think I’m going to get a chance to show anybody what I can do,” James said.
“I’m not going to play, at least not right now.
I’ve got a little bit of a break.”
James had a great debut, finishing with 25 points and seven rebounds, but he struggled with his shot and the Cavs shot just 29 percent in the first half, which was their lowest first half total of the season.
The Cavs are currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind the Washington Wizards for the top seed.
“That’s the first game I’ve been back and it’s not been fun,” James told reporters after the game.
“The first game is the first time I’ve felt comfortable shooting the ball.
I’m just trying to get back to being able to shoot it well and getting it to the basket.”
James, like all NBA players, is allowed to play in any game at any time, but this is the second time he’s had to miss a game because of a foot injury.
He had to leave the game early in December because of what the Cavs called an “extensive fracture of the ankle.”
The Cavs are still searching for answers for their season-ending injury to James, and it seems likely that he’ll have to miss the next two games to fully recover.
They’re hoping to be back on the court for Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Tuesday, but it won’t be without some big changes for James.
“When we go out there, it’s a big game, it has a lot of significance,” James admitted.
“It’s a good opportunity to get the win and get back in the playoffs.
I’ll be ready.”
James is also getting more rest, having missed six games with an ankle injury in December.
That included the first four games of the postseason, when he missed seven games.
James will get some extra rest with two more games on the road in Oklahoma City on Monday and in San Antonio on Wednesday, but the Cavs aren’t ready to start him.
“We’re just not ready to go out and play that early in the season, but we’ll be back,” James added.
“We’ve got to be ready.
It’s a long season and we’re not going out there and expecting to play every night.
James has a chance of playing in Game 4, if he plays at all.
